The Days In Between

The Days In Between

It's a familiar round of activity in the days between a new Doctor's first and second episodes...

There's the wait for the overnight ratings to be made available, but then you have to mentally adjust those for the timeshifting figures during the week.

So, in the case of 'The Woman Who Fell To Earth', that initial 8 or so million is going to end up around 10+ million, which is very good news.

But then you start to think about next week - how many people will come back for more? Inevitably, you'll lose some and hopefully gain some replacements, if the word-of-mouth factor is good.

There was certainly a significant drop between 'Rose' and 'The End Of The World' as a launch episode tends to be boosted by the simple curiosity factor.

Now for some people, this is "Do I like the new Doctor?" but let's not ignore that for others it will be the much more interesting "So what is this 'Doctor Who' thing anyway?".

Now, with the opening scene of Jodie's first episode giving a nod to YouTube, I wondered if anyone on there had attempted to answer that question, finding themselves giving the show a try for the first time, perhaps just interested by the trailers or other publicity.

Happily, there's a channel going by the name of 'Geeked Out Nation' which has done exactly that with a reaction video that can be seen here.

I won't say too much more, except that as fans we can sometimes see the series very differently to the more general audience, so I was very interested to watch someone coming to this episode with completely fresh eyes.

There's been a definite effort to encourage new viewers on board and I think it's already paying dividends.

Roll on Sunday, of course...

But let's not forget Monday morning when we begin the cycle of numbers all over again!
